WHAT GOES UP, MUST GO DOWN
Take a look a this. It's the temperature departures for the next 7 days on the GFS. That old red paint ball in the middle of the nation is some warm weather that will get October off to a summery start here in the Midwest.
The EURO is certainly in agreement showing 6 consecutive days in Davenport with highs in the 80s beginning Saturday. Normal readings are about 69. That's impressive!
This trend is tied heavily to a buckled storm track that emanates out of the southwest. Watch that ridge explode over the EC United States. Up comes the warmth.
WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN
Just as impressive is the reversal that unfolds late next week. Take a look at the NW flow that replaces the warmth with a noticeable cool-down.
Temperature departures the following 7 days (October 6-13th) are radically different over the eastern half of the country.
In terms of precipitation, there's not much of that to be had until the transition from warm to cool takes place the middle next week. By then, water vapor (moisture) has increased to 1.5 inches. When a cold front enters that the picture Wednesday that should generate showers and storms. The strength of any storms and the amount of rain will be determined by the speed and timing of the front. Something we won't know for several days. Even so, the set-up holds the promise of at least some rain for those that missed out on it the past week.
Speaking of that, the latest drought index is out showing better news for some and more of the same for others. Most of Illinois and small parts of eastern Iowa near the Mississippi are in the best shape with either abnormally dry or moderate drought indicated. Further west, severe to extreme drought continues.
In the comparison to last week, virtually all of the exceptional drought over northeast Iowa and SW Wisconsin was entirely wiped out thanks to beneficial rains there. That said, there's still lots of work to be done to eliminate the dry conditions that encompass most of the Midwest.
As proof, here's the rainfall departures in Iowa over the past 90 days. There's a lot of dryness over the eastern half of the state.
As you can see, Iowa is the driest state in the Midwest with 73 percent short on topsoil moisture.
MAKE YOUR PLANS OUTDOORS THIS WEEKEND
As mentioned, rain will not be a factor in the region this weekend. A warm front will slip north of the Iowa border Friday night opening the door for several days of much above normal temperatures and what is going to be a fine weekend of weather. Some patchy fog could start the day in the NE Friday but after that sunshine is expected to prevail and last through early next week. Highs Friday will climb into the upper 70s to low 80s. Saturday and Sunday are even warmer with mid to upper 80s expected. If this is your kind of weather, soak it all in as days like this will be few and far between going forward. Have a great weekend and roll weather....TS
