THE HOME STRETCH...

THE HOME STRETCH, ANOTHER STORM ON THE HORIZON

We are entering the home stretch of this winter storm. As winter storm warnings continue to fly, another 2–4 inches of accumulation is likely. The exception is the far southeast, where the proximity of the 850 low and dry slot has significantly diminished precipitation. Additional amounts here may only be an inch or so. These are snow reports in so far from the Iowa mesonet and NWS. Some of these are hours old and more has fallen, so keep in mind not all of these are current.

The dry slot has clipped my eastern counties limiting accumulations there. In fact, modeling did not do a great job of seeing this trend and the heavy snow (deformation band) set-up further west than anticipated. These things are always tricky!

With the low spinning away, snow will gradually diminish in intensity towards evening and end around midnight. By then, strong N/NW winds up to 40 and colder temperatures will allow for some blowing snow, especially in the open country. We are fortunate temperatures were not a few degrees colder, or blowing snow would have been a far more significant issue.

ANOTHER MAJOR STORM POSSIBLE

A quick moving disturbance follows this up Wednesday night and could deposit up to an inch of snow in spots, but overall shouldn't cause many issues. Friday, another significant storm seems to be shaping up that will bring another round of wind and snow. With colder temperatures, blowing snow is likely to be more of an issue. Models are still not in sync on track, but the EURO has been consistent so far and is the one that is further west. It shows this for snowfall Friday into early Saturday.

Behind it, sub-zero cold and low wind chills become a factor. High impact weather remains on the table into the weekend. More on the situation in my next post.
