RARE AIR, 80s AGAIN...
A strong weather system out west will ramp up the pressure gradient today, resulting in a day of whistling SW winds. Gusts of up to 40 mph are expected, causing the leaves to fly like kites. More important, the EURO indicates very warm 850 temperatures of 16-20 C. for the majority of my region. That's near the record for the sounding climatology registered at the NWS office in Davenport.
That's kept temperatures in the 60s overnight, a good 20–25 degrees above normal. Further NW, anomalies over 30 degrees are shown in NC Iowa.
The exceptionally mild night sets the table for what appears to be near record (or even record) high temperatures Tuesday afternoon. This late in the year, the days are short and the sun angle low, which combined with passing high clouds may be just enough to keep us below established records. The amount of sunshine will be the key. Here's where we need to get to achieve any new marks.
RECORD HIGHS FOR OCTOBER 29th
BURLINGTON.......85, 1937
DUBUQUE.............85, 1937
CEDAR RAPIDS...84, 1937
MOLINE................84, 1937
By the way, the average date of the last 85 in Cedar Rapids is September 21st. We are a full 5 weeks beyond that if we get one! Additionally, today or Wednesday is most likely going to be the last day this year with an 80 degree high. The 30-year average indicates the next 85 is not likely until May 9th, more than 6 months away. Enough said about that.
Warm as it will be, the winds Tuesday will be a detriment creating a high fire danger, especially across the north which missed some of the beneficial rain that fell last Thursday night. Here in Dubuque, (Tuesday being another dry day), we will have accumulated just .25 inches of rain since August 31st, (a 60-day period with measurable rain on just 3 days, .05% of the time). That is a remarkable feat!
The next big thing is a potentially significant rain event Wednesday night and early Halloween day. With the strong SW flow aloft continuing into Wednesday, moisture is freely transported into the Midwest, as evidenced by water vapor that is shown exceeding 1.50 inches.
That is up to 3 standard deviations above the climatological norm. In other words, there is ample moisture.
What's disappointing is the fact the surface low tracks through eastern Iowa, which means the most prolonged forcing and heaviest rain may fall just to the NW of my area. Models are sniffing that trend with a nudge in that direction. Even so, rain of 1/2 to 1 inch looks like a good bet in most areas. Here's what the EURO and GFS suggest for rain through Halloween morning.
THE EURO
The GFS
SPOOKTACULAR...
For trick or treating Thursday evening, dry air will cut off the moisture and bring a rain free environment for beggars. Temperatures will generally be in the range of 45-50 through early evening. However, there will be enough of a breeze to create wind chills of 40-45. My advice, layer up your spook.
After a dry, crisp day Friday with highs in the low to mid 50s, clouds will be on the increase Saturday and another rain event is on tap Saturday night and Sunday. In fact, the baroclinic boundary between warm and cold air resides close by much of next week. That implies the Midwest will be the battleground for multiple impulses, creating what could be a classic heavy rain event for some parts of the Midwest. Below, you can see the strong tendency for high rainfall totals in the Midwest, with a large area of the Midwest bathed in well above normal precipitation.
Rainfall amounts will fluctuate in future model runs, based in the individual tracks of disturbances ejecting out of the mean trough holding in the west.
An example of the potential that exists is the GFS, which shows this for rainfall potential the next 2 weeks ending November 13th. Some very healthy numbers showing up, especially in central Missouri.
While there is a strong trend for cooler weather around November 7th or 8th, models remain big on the idea of a western trough holding. On balance, that should keep temperatures above normal the first 2 weeks of November. These are the week one temperature departures on the EURO for the 7-day period ending November 4th.
The week 2 temperature departures for the 7-day period ending November 11th. Not much sign of winter there.
With that, I will call it a post. Enjoy the warmth but hold on to your hat, those winds are going to screech, the price you pay for 80s in late October. Roll weather...TS

What a gem! The Little White Church exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect spot to meet up with another couple to relax and explore nearby Galena. We enjoyed the beautiful great room with its fireplace and amazing views of the rolling countryside. (The photos simply can't do it justice). The charming church/home was quiet, well appointed and clean. And Carolyn was proactive with instructions and a terrific communicator. We will definitely be back!

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
