I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE

It was another very warm day around the central Midwest Tuesday, with highs well into the 80s. In most spots, readings were 12-15 degrees above normal. That's impressive.

What was not impressive was the humidity. Drier air has been working slowly west off the Great Lakes the past couple of days, and Tuesday afternoon punched into eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Water vapor was not much more than 0.55 inches locally. That produced a very comfortable dew point of 52 at 2:00pm in the Quad Cities, making the warmth tolerable. However, you get to Des Moines and points west, moisture rapidly increased, shooting into the range of 1.25 to 1.50 inches.

That deeper moisture resides on the periphery of high pressure in a region where winds switch to the south instead of coming in from the southeast. You can see the moisture plume Tuesday extending from western Iowa into the deep south.

This return flow of moisture will set the stage for our first chance of showers and storms in almost 3 weeks. However, it will take another 36–48 hours for the water vapor to make it this far east. That sets the area up for another very warm, but dry day Wednesday, with highs again in the mid 80s.

Thursday looks to remain generally dry, but moisture makes its move on the Mississippi River Valley and available water vapor increases to more than an inch, climbing into the range of 1.50 to 1.70 inches Thursday night. After a warm, sticky day, I spy with my little eye at least a few scattered showers and storms entering the picture Thursday night.

Overall amounts appear to be light and confined more to the area west of the Mississippi in Iowa. The system moves out quickly, leaving us with what now appears to be mainly dry weather Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Temperatures remain toasty for late September, holding fast in the low to mid 80s. Sometime Monday or Tuesday, an upper air disturbance rolls into the Midwest. That ends our run of 80 degree warmth and brings what seems to be a respectable rain chance. Here's what the EURO indicates for temperatures the next 10 days. You can easily see the change to cooler weather next week.

If the EURO verifies, its forecast suggests 14 consecutive days in the Quad Cities, with highs in the 80s. That would be the second longest such streak of the entire summer. Coming in September, that is saying something. Here you can see the 16-day stretch in June that is not likely to be surpassed.

With the change to cooler weather next week, also comes the rain chance I mentioned Sunday night that could carry into Monday evening. With ample moisture in place and a fairly slow passage of energy and forcing, beneficial and welcome rains are a real consideration. Between Thursday night and this secondary event, here's what models are suggesting for rainfall.

Meantime, this surge of summer, (which most likely won't be repeated this year), has a few more days of life. I suggest enjoying it, the first snowflakes last year were noted October 31st in most areas. Roll weather...TS

What a gem! The Little White Church exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect spot to meet up with another couple to relax and explore nearby Galena. We enjoyed the beautiful great room with its fireplace and amazing views of the rolling countryside. (The photos simply can't do it justice). The charming church/home was quiet, well appointed and clean. And Carolyn was proactive with instructions and a terrific communicator. We will definitely be back!

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
