GETTING FRESH & FRISKY

It may not look like much on the satellite image, but a little disturbance in Canada will play a big role in our temperatures Friday night. That red L, represents a short wave that is in the process of amplifying. As the vorticity rotates southeast, it spins up a closed upper air low destined to bring the coldest temperatures since late April.

At 500mb, you can watch as the disturbance closes off on its journey towards the Great Lakes this weekend. Essentially, the upper air low is a reflection of anomalously cool air that rotates around the parent circulation. Features such as this will become more common in coming weeks as wave lengths change heading into fall.

When I talk about a pocket of cold air, that's literally what it is, as you can see by the 850 temperature anomalies Saturday morning. The coldest air is located directly under the stacked 500mb low.

The cold core circulation rotates over my area Friday afternoon and night, dropping 850 temperatures to 3 degrees C. That type of cold air aloft will no doubt create strong lapse rates that in turn generate cumulus clouds and bands of stratus Friday afternoon.

The extent of the clouds could impact Friday's temperatures, especially in the northeast, where some low to mid 60s are possible. A few light showers are also likely, but these will be brief and widely scattered. Most areas should see enough sun to reach the upper 60s, with some low 70s in the far south. North winds of 15-25 deliver the cool air. The EURO shows this for rainfall from the spotty showers.

Cold air advection kicks in big time Friday night, allowing skies to clear and winds to decrease in the late evening. Temperatures should tank and lows of 40-45 seem to be a good bet, especially if winds taper off quickly after sunset. The GFS has this for lows.

The 3k NAM is 2-3 degrees colder, producing a few upper 30s in my northern counties. The 3k often has a cold bias, so I am inclined to go with the GFS in this case and its low 40s, which are not far from records. No matter what, Saturday starts off very crisp.

Later Saturday, the high shifts east, allowing return flow by afternoon. With full sunshine, highs remain cool with readings in the range of 65 north to 70 south. Sunday and Monday look outstanding, with highs in the low 70s Sunday and mid to upper 70s Monday.

The screaming message is cooler weather the next 5 days, with temperature departures looking like this through Tuesday on the EURO.

After that, we flip the pattern, and it's back to warmer weather in the day 5-10 day period.

You can see the swing from cool to warm on the 10 day meteogram for the Quad City temperatures.

This bouncy up and down temperature pattern is typical of this time of year as the transition to fall begins. Aside from temperatures, September is also known to be a fairly stable month, with prolonged periods of dry weather. It sure looks like that is in the cards, with precipitation on the GFS indicated to be far below normal over the next 2 weeks.

Happy Friday everyone, nothing like a short week thanks to a holiday. Roll weather...TS

What a gem! The Little White Church exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect spot to meet up with another couple to relax and explore nearby Galena. We enjoyed the beautiful great room with its fireplace and amazing views of the rolling countryside. (The photos simply can't do it justice). The charming church/home was quiet, well appointed and clean. And Carolyn was proactive with instructions and a terrific communicator. We will definitely be back!

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
