ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE

The past few days, I've been outlining chances for some much-needed rain. One of those opportunities is over, having passed Thursday night. As expected, it was a bit spotty and while most saw little to no rain, a few of you had a decent soaker, especially if you were up north closer to HWY 20. Below, you can see the Doppler radar estimates of how much fell.

Here is a closer perspective put together by the NWS in the Quad Cities.

One of the locations that missed on Thursday night's rain was Cedar Rapids, at least at the Eastern Iowa Airport, where Saturday is starting as the 22nd consecutive day with no measurable rain. Obviously, it can't be any drier than that, so this is the all-time driest start to the month of September.

So, in Cedar Rapids and many other places, people are still seeking the elusive September raindrop. Well, as the preacher says, ask and ye shall receive! A weather system approaching from the SW looks to promote salvation, bringing a prolonged period of forcing that initiates occasional showers and thunderstorms as early as late Saturday afternoon in the north. These work their way south Saturday night, lingering into Sunday and Sunday night as the system slowly edges east.

The severe weather threat appears relatively low, but it does look as if Saturday will see enough heating to easily support highs in the range of 86 to 91. With dew points climbing into the upper 60s, some respectable instability is expected. CAPE on the 3k NAM reaches the range of 1,500 to 3,000 j/kg. late in the day.

The supercell composite around that time in is clustered between 8-12 in the north. That would promote some rotating updrafts, and It's possible some strong storms could pop towards late day and then dig southeast during the evening.

At the very least, the storms have the capability to produce heavy downpours, where the strongest updrafts occur, especially with available water vapor pushing 2 inches. That's a 24-hour jump of more than an inch.

The front that sparks the initial storms only slowly sinks southeast, allowing additional spokes of energy to produce more periods of showers and storms as they ripple along the boundary Sunday and Sunday night. By the time it all moves out early Monday, this is what models are suggesting for total rainfall.

The 3k NAM

The EURO

The GFS

The impact of the frontal passage, clouds, and rain cooled air can't be dismissed. With northeast winds and low clouds, some models hold highs in the low 60s across the north Sunday. Mid to upper 60s are noted elsewhere. Compared to the warm, sticky conditions of Saturday, this will be a very big change. Temperatures Sunday afternoon could be as much as 30 degrees cooler than 24 hours earlier. See what the 3k NAM shows.

With some lingering cloud cover and perhaps a few showers in the south, readings are likely to remain in the low to mid 60s Monday as well.

After that, rain prospects look minimal Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures remaining a bit below normal. The late week period is somewhat muddled, as the GFS brings a fairly strong closed low into the region Thursday and Friday. That brings unsettled conditions that bring scattered showers and a continuation of cool temperatures. The EURO is not as bullish and therefore not as showery or cool. We shall see...

Please enjoy Saturday's summery temperatures. I suspect we won't see readings this warm again for about 7 months. Welcome to fall, which officially starts at 7:44am Sunday. Roll weather...TS.

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
