A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN
There's a new sheriff town when it comes to our weather. After a bone dry September and October, we've undergone a pattern change to start November, and the next two graphics are telling. The first, showing precipitation, exemplifies how we are off to one of the wettest starts in November history.
These rain totals from the NWS Quad Cities, are from the long duration rain event of November 2-5th
Below, are the resulting precipitation departures for the 7-day period ending November 6th, Much of Iowa, Missouri, and central Wisconsin experienced totals that are 500-700 percent greater than average.
Temperatures in November are nothing to sneeze at either, running well above normal from the Rockies to the Atlantic.
November departures are generally 6–8 degrees above the mean across my area.
The mean 500mb flow has recently been in this configuration, a trough west verses a ridge east. The SW flow brings rain producing moisture and disturbances along with warmth.
MORE OF THE SAME
Going forward, the mean trough looks to remain anchored over the west for much of the next 2 weeks. That implies we see more of the same in our sensible weather. Although I do expect to see a scaled back version of the wet, mild conditions.
The remainder of this week is spent under high pressure, which brings crisp but pleasant conditions by early November standards. I look for highs in the mid to upper 50s Thursday and upper 50s to near 60 Friday.
Our next system spins in from the southwest Saturday, bringing a brief but stout bout of vorticity. The progressive nature of the system should keep rain amounts light. The EURO is unimpressed, showing these totals.
The GFS is more robust, especially in the SE indicating these amounts. I suspect the GFS is very much on the high side, with that axis of heavier rain in Illinois. For the most part, I think rain amounts will be under .25 inches.
The precipitation which sweeps in on Saturday afternoon should diminish in the evening and end by daybreak Sunday. A few brief backwash showers are indicated by the GFS across the north Sunday morning but more than anything, clouds will be the dominate force along with brisk NW winds. Highs both days should remain largely in the mid 50s.
Behind the system, ridging prevails early next week, with another uptick in temperatures. Highs in the 60s are possible Monday and Tuesday and if the GFS is right, Wednesday could crack 60 too. Rain could be back as early as Tuesday night or Wednesday.
If you are a snow freak like me, you are looking to get some cold air into the pattern. That's been tough to do with the split in the upper level wind flow at 500mb. We have some great looking troughs in the current set-up, but little in the way of cold air to produce anything but rain. I don't see a lot of positive signs for sustained cold most of November, with the MJO projected to move into the mild phases of 4, 5, and 6 by late November and early December.
What I would be thrilled to see is the MJO continue its rotation into 7, 8, and 1 around December 10th, which it seems on track to do. Those are cold phases which could really create some winter mischief by mid-December. This year's hurricane season correlates to wintry conditions in mid to late December, and that and the MJO cycle gives me hope for a snowy pattern before Christmas. But, that is not a sure thing, so I'm keeping my optimism in check.
Meantime, we are in for a couple more days of what I would call pleasant November conditions. Enjoy and roll weather...TS

What a gem! The Little White Church exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect spot to meet up with another couple to relax and explore nearby Galena. We enjoyed the beautiful great room with its fireplace and amazing views of the rolling countryside. (The photos simply can't do it justice). The charming church/home was quiet, well appointed and clean. And Carolyn was proactive with instructions and a terrific communicator. We will definitely be back!

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
