A LOT TO LIKE...

The long awaited change to a more user-friendly brand of weather is underway. The catalyst was a cold front that plowed through the area during the early morning hours of Friday. Not only will it be more comfortable, the front brought some much-needed rain to my northern counties. Here in Dubuque, (at least at the airport) 3.17 inches of rain was reported. Previous to that, August rainfall for the first 28 days was just .89 inches, that's 3 inches below normal. Thanks to the 3.17 inches that just fell, in a matter of hours the monthly total reached 4.06 inches, allowing the month to end up with slightly above normal rainfall. There's a saying, averages are comprised of extremes, and this is a perfect example of that. On paper, this will go down as a very normal month for rainfall, but the majority of the month's rain came in 1 event less than 10 hours in duration.

Below, you can see the Doppler rain estimates that clearly shows the bulk of the system's heavy rains Thursday night falling over the NW half of my area, especially from the Quad Cities northwest.

Here's a graphic from the NWS in the Quad Cities showing some specific rain totals.

Behind the system, NW flow is in the process of being established thanks to a short wave that digs southeast into the Great Lakes over the holiday weekend.

That brings a secondary cold front to the region Saturday night. It will be a dry frontal passage, but it will serve to bring even cooler and drier air into the region. After highs Saturday in the low 80s, readings Sunday and Labor Day will remain in the mid 70s.

Even more impressive will be the dew points. Thursday they were in the mid to upper 70s. By Tuesday of next week, they will dip well into the 40s, about 30 degrees lower. We can definitively say humidity will be a thing of the past once Sunday arrives.

And get a load of this. It's the 8-14 day outlook showing below normal temperatures and precipitation during the period September 6-12th.

The EURO meteogram for the Quad Cities shows temperature trends for the next 10 days. After an 81 Saturday, highs remain in the 70s next week before falling into the 60s next weekend. If the EURO is on track, highs are no warmer than 61 September 9th. At that point, lows are in the 40s. That certainly looks and smells like fall.

These are the temperature departures shown over the central Midwest, September 9th.

You can see at the surface, the large expanse of Canadian high pressure entrenched over central Canada, September 7th. The cyclonic circulation around it should bring the sustained flow of cool dry air that drives the cool readings the EURO meteogram is showing around that time period. This would give the Midwest a real taste of fall weather in roughly a week.

In general, the next week looks cool, calm, and what I would call collected. Enjoy what should be some delightful late summer conditions. Roll weather...TS.

What a gem! The Little White Church exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect spot to meet up with another couple to relax and explore nearby Galena. We enjoyed the beautiful great room with its fireplace and amazing views of the rolling countryside. (The photos simply can't do it justice). The charming church/home was quiet, well appointed and clean. And Carolyn was proactive with instructions and a terrific communicator. We will definitely be back!

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
