A BIT OF A DOWNER...

A cold front beat a hasty trek across the Midwest Tuesday, leaving the region with breezy and decidedly cooler weather, what I would call "a bit of a downer". Most areas were only in the mid to upper 60s in the afternoon, a good 15 to 19 degrees cooler than Monday. It certainly did feel more like fall. These are some of the 24-hour temperature changes as of 1:00pm Tuesday.

This satellite image shows the front plowing east through Michigan and Indiana Tuesday afternoon. Despite the strength of the temperature change, forcing and moisture was limited, promoting a dry frontal passage.

These rain free fronts are something we have seen far too much of in the past month. Here you can see the rainfall departures we've accumulated over the past 30 days. Especially dry is EC Iowa, where Wednesday will be the 33rd consecutive day with no measurable rain in Cedar Rapids.

Over the past month, soil moisture has declined 70-90 percent over much of my area and points NW.

Behind Tuesday's front, even drier air has moved back into the region with available water vapor as low as a 1/4 inch in NC Wisconsin.

Dew points are down in the low to mid 30s. Good luck getting rain out of an air mass like that.

The dry air will provide us with a chilly start Wednesday. That, along with minimal clouds and diminishing winds, will allow temperatures to plunge into the low 40s (perhaps a few upper 30s in some of the valleys of the far north). The 3k NAM shows this.

The dry air heats up rapidly though and with return flow already in progress Wednesday, temperatures will warm rapidly after the chilly start. Most spots should reach the 70 degree mark.

Going forward, the mean 7-day upper air flow at 500mb sets up in a W/NW flow, which continues to bring a mild flow of air off the Pacific. Above normal temperatures will continue for the foreseeable future, with fronts making only minimal progress into the Midwest. One Thursday night and another Saturday night may scare up enough moisture to produce a brief light shower or sprinkle. However, if these do develop, they should be scattered and light. Most likely not enough to settle the dust, which has become appreciable in this dry pattern. Here's what the EURO suggests for rain the next 15 days.

As for temperatures, the EURO shows readings that look more like early September than mid-October the next 10 days.

The EURO weeklies do point to what could be a pattern change to cooler weather towards mid-October. In fact, by November 11th it shows a full latitude trough that would bring a healthy shot of cold air.

850 temperature anomalies (at 5,000 ft.) are shown about 17 degrees C. below normal November 12th. That is an eye-opening shot of cold.

Look at the snow that builds up over North America between now and mid November.

These are temperature departures over the 30-day period. October 17-November 16th. The EURO usually has trouble seeing cold, so for it to come in that strong for such a long period of time could mean it's on to something.

Clearly, a long range forecast is highly speculative and therefore has lower confidence than one that is 3–7 days. It's certainly something to watch though as cold air is rapidly building at higher latitudes. In a month it will have a real punch if it can find its way into the Midwest. Time will tell.

Meantime, it's back to breezy, dry and warmer weather Wednesday afternoon. The beat goes on. Roll weather...TS

What a gem! The Little White Church exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect spot to meet up with another couple to relax and explore nearby Galena. We enjoyed the beautiful great room with its fireplace and amazing views of the rolling countryside. (The photos simply can't do it justice). The charming church/home was quiet, well appointed and clean. And Carolyn was proactive with instructions and a terrific communicator. We will definitely be back!

This place is so beautiful! Carolyn and Terry were so thoughtful and kind to let us have our wedding at the church. They even provided extra supplies in case we needed them. The private garden worked perfectly for our ceremony, and the backyard easily fit our reception needs. Not to mention, the balconies make perfect photo spots! My husband and I recommend the Little White Church and will be telling all our friends about it.
